Carlos Tevez will be hoping for a wizard’s touch when he faces Macclesfield Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The striker could face up to six months in prison, after being charged with driving while disqualified and without insurance last month.
But Manchester-based law firm Burton Copeland’s Gwyn Lewis – known as ‘Merlin the Magician’ – will represent the 29-year-old.
The firm’s website says: “‘Merlin the Magician’, as he is called by personnel at Manchester City Football Club for whom he regularly acts, has made many worrying cases disappear.”
Tevez was arrested in Cheshire on March 7, after being stopped by police while allegedly driving while disqualified.
The striker had been banned from driving after ignoring court summonses for previous motoring offences – he said he did not understand the word ‘constabulary’ on the letters.
However, despite Tevez’s legal worries, the saga appears not to have affected his performances on the pitch.
He netted an FA Cup hat trick against Barnsley shortly after the arrest and scored the opener in last weekend’s 4-0 against Newcastle United.
The Argentine’s City teammate and fellow countryman Pablo Zabaleta believes the situation has in fact spurred him on.
“Roberto Mancini said the last time he hopes the police will stop him again because it looks like for him it is a great motivation,” said Zabaleta.
“It was just a small mistake by Carlos. He knows now he has to be calm, otherwise he is going to be in trouble.
“Now he has got some friends to bring him to Carrington every day.”
On the pitch, Tevez will be looking forward to this month’s FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea, as he looks to help City regain the trophy.
