The bitter war of words between Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather has reached an all-time high after the Bolton boxer claimed on Twitter that the American is ‘full of shit’.
Tensions between the pair escalated last month after Mayweather announced he would not face Khan in his May 3 bout, despite winning an online fan-poll Mayweather had ran himself to determine his next opponent.
Khan revealed over the weekend that a possible fight with the three-time world champion, Adrien Broner was being lined up on the undercard of the five-weight world champion’s clash with Marcos Maidana.
The Bolton speed-puncher even took to Twitter to taunt Mayweather, who is a close friend of Broner, into making the fight.
A frustrated Khan tweeted the American on Sunday: “@FloydMayweather, tell @AdrienBroner to fight me on your card and when I beat him, you fight me next!”
Mayweather fired back this morning with something of a tongue-in-cheek response, stating Khan could finally get finally secure the lucrative if he defeats Broner.
Speaking to his 4.3million followers on Facebook, Mayweather said: “I don’t have an easy fight on May 3, 2014, so I can’t overlook Marcos Maidana but Amir Khan if you and Adrien Broner end up fighting each other on my show and you win (which you won’t)… I’ll fight you.”
However, Khan isn’t convinced by Mayweather’s promise, after the unbeaten American previously went back on his word after the Biolton boxer won a fan poll to determine his next opponent.
Khan, who is currently training in Los Angeles, tweeted back two hours ago: “FM is full of shit. Just like ‘my next opponent’ Poll.”
With the Broner clash looking ever more likely, Khan has ruled out a clash with fellow Brit Kell Brook, who reportedly offered £5million to face the former world champion.
Khan clearly has eyes on bigger fish, stating his preference for Broner or fellow welterweight kings Roberto Guerrero, Shawn Porter or Devon Alexander.
Khan was set to face Alexander last year, but withdrew from negotiations late in the day under the assumption that he would get a shot at Mayweather.
Broner, who has quickly emerged as one of the boxing world’s great talents, winning numerous titles in three weight categories along the way, suffered his first loss of his 28-fight career in December to Maidana.
He had moved up to welterweight in his previous fight, winning somewhat unconvincingly on points against the New Yorker, Paulie Malignaggi.
Golden Boy Promotions, who represent Broner and Mayweather, have yet to comment on the potential match-up.
