Shaun Wane demands improvement from Wigan Warriors ahead of tough Castlefield Tigers test

By Colin Henrys

Shaun Wane has demanded an improvement from his Wigan Warriors players against Castleford Tigers today despite a comprehensive defeat of London Broncos last weekend.

Despite the 48-18 win, Wane believes there is still plenty of room for improvement as they look to defend their League Leaders Shield.

Wane revealed he made his points clear during a heated team meeting and urged his players to respond in what he believes will be a difficult visit to Castleford.

“I want and I demand to see improvement and if I see that at Castleford I will be happy,” he told the club’s website.

“It was by no means an all positive meeting and if anything it was the opposite.

“Castleford are tough at home, it is a compact stadium and a difficult place to go.

“The atmosphere is usually great, usually one sided for Castleford, but I know the quality we have in our team.

“I know they have some great players in that team.”

Wane admitted he expects the small pitch at the Wish Communications Stadium to pose a problem for Wigan’s expansive rugby.

However, he called on his players to deliver physically and mentally on Sunday as they bid to catch early league leaders Huddersfield Giants.

“It is quite a small pitch so maybe not the best venue to try and play an expansive game, the way we like to play but we need to be able to adapt,” he said.

“If you show any signs of any lack of enthusiasm they will get you.

“We want to make sure we keep hold of the ball and complete all our sets and make sure when we do have the ball we produce some quality with it.

“I am expecting a real tough game and I am hoping we can be mentally tough.”
