Manuel Pellegrini faces his sternest test as Manchester City manager tonight when his side play host to European champions Bayern Munich.
City have already squared off against the German giants this year, losing in a pre-season match, and James Milner believes the Citizens have learned from the experience.
The Blues currently sit joint top of Group D with tonight’s opponents after both recording 3-0 victories from their opening fixtures.
Milner has stressed the importance of playing at home, and believes that even though City lost in Germany in August they can still get a positive result when it matters.
“I think we played well and probably could have taken at least a draw,” the midfielder told the club’s official website.
“So I think that’s a good confidence builder and although it was in pre-season, it provides us with a great insight into how they play.”
“It’s very important to try and take maximum points from our three home games.
“If you can take nine points and maybe get one win away from home, you’ve qualified for the next stage. So if we can win our home matches, it’s obviously a massive help.”
City will be hoping to progress from the group stages for the first time after disappointing campaigns in the last two seasons.
According to Milner French winger Franck Ribery represents the main danger for a side who can pose a threat from all over the pitch.
“He’s got all the ability in the world, is very sharp and quick and he goes past people and scores goals.
“He has a huge influence on games, but they have a great squad, full of good players and it’s going to be a tough 90 minutes.”
