New Oldham Athletic signing Genseric Kusunga is delighted to have been given an opportunity to prove himself after joining on transfer deadline day.
The 25-year-old former FC Basel defender has moved to Boundary Park until the end of this season with Latics having the option to extend until the summer of 2015.
Kusunga spent last season on loan at Servette, the club where he started his career, and despite offers from other clubs in England and abroad believes Oldham is the correct fit for him.
“I got on well with the lads and thought this would be a good environment for me to play my football,” he told the club’s website
“I am excited and it is a big challenge and opportunity to play in a different country.
“I am here to do my best for Oldham, though obviously in the future I would like to play at the highest level if that is possible.”
The Swiss-born defender played for Angola before the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, the country of his parent’s birth, despite being called into Switzerland Under-21 squad when he was younger.
He made only 17 appearances for Basel in three years but during this time they won theSwiss title in 2010/11 and league and cup double in 2011/12.
One of his appearances included coming on as a sub as Basel beat Manchester United 2-1 to knock them out of the Champions League.
“Playing in the side which beat Manchester United was the highlight of my career and it was a great experience to play in the Champions League,” he added.
Subject to international clearance, Kusunga will be available for Oldham’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round match against Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow tomorrow.
