Salford City Reds welcome veteran St Helens winger Francis Meli on board for 2014 season

By Andrew Locke

Experienced winger Francis Meli is joining Salford City Reds on a one year deal for the 2014 season after leaving Super League club St Helens.

The new addition follows the recent signings of Warrington’s Adrian Morley and Melbourne Storm centre Junior Sa’u who are both set to join the Reds.

Meli, 34, will be ending his eight year stay at the Saints after joining them in 2006 from Auckland Warriors.

A St Helens club officials said: “We’d like to place on record our gratitude to Francis for his effort and commitment to the club since he signed in 2006.”

Meli has 141 appearances for St Helens so far scoring 376 points.

He is a first team regular for the club – notable for his pace and power when on the ball.

He has also represented both New Zealand and more recently, Samoa, when playing internationally.

The Reds will no doubt hoping that Meli will be able to bring his attacking prowess to Salford for next season, along with experience from his many years of playing.

The new additions to the Salford squad will hopefully bring about a change following the disappointing showing from the Reds this season who currently find themselves one point above bottom of the table London Broncos.

The Saints club official added: “We’d like to wish him all the best at Salford City Reds next year.”
