Manchester United have made their latest signing – picking up a vintage programme dating back more than a century for a fee of £3,600 on eBay.
It may be currently outside the transfer window, but the Red Devils have splashed out on the rare item to add to their vast collection of memorabilia in their renowned museum at Old Trafford.
Scott Gould from Bristol was the lucky person who discovered the programme dating back to United’s fourth-round FA cup tie at Burnley in 1909, and explained he wasn’t expecting to receive such a significant amount after bidding started at a meagre £4.95.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING: eBay auctioneer Scott Gould started at £4.75 and ended up with £3,600
“I knew it was quite a rare item, but was highly surprised it sold for what it did,” he told MM.
Scott discovered the item at an auction house amongst a collection of early programmes and postcards relating to the Burnley and Blackpool area dating from around 1900 to 1920.
The 16-page programme dates back to the first year when United won the FA Cup – the first of 11 triumphs in the world-famous cup competition – and it was sold for a price of just ONE PENNY.
It was originally issued on March 6, but the game was abandoned after 72 minutes due to bad weather with Burnley leading 1-0 and 15,000 fans in attendance.
The tie was played again four days later on March 10 with a second programme being issued, where United ran out 4-2 winners.
This led to an impressive run where they then went on to beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the semi-finals before triumphing over Bristol City in the final by the same scoreline.
Scott revealed exactly what he intended to do with his eBay winnings.
“I will spend the money round the auction houses looking for more lucky finds,” he said.
