Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill hopes that his side’s defensive record of conceding only one goal throughout the whole of January will help them survive against the cutthroat Manchester City at the Etihad on Monday.
City will be looking to remain undefeated at home in the league against Chelsea as well as adding to the 72 goals they have already racked up in all competitions in their own back yard.
But the England international Cahill wants his side to replicate the result at Stamford Bridge in October that resulted in Joe Hart being dropped by City.
“We need to try to get a positive result on Monday but we know how difficult it’s going to be,” he told Chelseafc.com.
“They put another five in, they’re banging goals in left, right and centre so it’s going to be a tough test for us.
“Defensively we’re doing well, we’re not letting in too many goals, Monday will be the ultimate test but hopefully we can get a result.”
Cahill said that he believes the game will be cagey but with the array of attacking stars at the disposal of Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, Chelsea will have to be at their best to get a result.
“Man City have got some physical players but they’ve got a lot of creative, sharp players with dangerous movement,” he explained.
“I think concentration will be a big part of the game on Monday and it could be a bit of individual brilliance that wins the game.
“Because of the players we’ve got we can always go to big clubs and get results. I’m sure for the neutral it’s going to be an exciting game and we’re looking forward to it.”
