The transfer market in England has gone mad though Manchester United’s new recruit Luke Shaw has not.
The 18-year-old England international’s £30million move from Southampton went through last week while former teammate Adam Lallana, another face of the future for the national side, secured a £25million deal with Liverpool today.
Shaw said rather than feel any sense of dread at such a price tag, the 10 years he spent on the south coast have given him all the confidence he needs to succeed at what he calls the world’s biggest club.
“At Southampton we learnt how to handle the pressure. That’s something I can deal with,” Shaw said.
“They meant the world to me… they’ve treated me and my family with such great respect.
“There will always be a place in my heart for Southampton.”
There will soon be a place in Shaw’s heart for a Dutch style of play too, with Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal primed to take United by storm next season.
“United is the biggest club in the world and they’re always going to be up there with the best.
“The main reason I’ve come here is they want to win trophies and so do I.
“I see he (Van Gaal) likes to play an attacking game. That’s how I present my game.
“He likes to play attacking full backs and that’s something I love doing. That’s the main attribute to my game.”
After Shaw’s first link up with his new colleagues in the USA for United’s summer tour, which will take in a sell-out clash against European champions Real Madrid, the teenager is then excited to glean as much knowledge as he can from France international and fellow left back Patrice Evra.
The 33-year-old progressed into the World Cup quarter-finals on Monday to set up a last-eight clash with Germany.
“I’m really excited to be working with him. He is one of the best left backs in the league. Hopefully I can learn a lot from him,” said Shaw.
