Manchester United’s squad lack respect ahead of the derby according to Teddy Sheringham

Teddy Sheringham has hinted the current Manchester United team lacks respect.

Wearing the jersey of the 20-time English top-flight champions is a privilege, according to the former England international.

This comes hours after Marcus Rashford’s interview, where he addressed his and his teammates desire to play for the club.

Talking on the talkSPORT morning show, the 57-year-old said: “You’ve got to understand the privilege of playing for Manchester United.

“There are millions of people around the world that would love to jump in your shoes.

“Show the respect when wearing the jersey, but at the moment it doesn’t look like that to me.”

Sheringham knows all about the honour of wearing the famous Red Devils shirt after spending four seasons at Old Trafford following his signature at the start of the 1997/8 season.

The 1999 Treble winner has the honour of never losing to their arch-rivals, Manchester City, while playing for Sir Alex Ferguson.

This is a statistic that none of the current Manchester United squad can claim, but they will be looking to rectify their 3-0 loss at Old Trafford in this season’s reverse fixture.

Despite Man City being heavy favourites due to the perceived lack of respect for the club from Erik ten Hag’s side, Pep Guardiola is cautious ahead of the derby.

He said: “I expect the best of our opponents. The best performance of them is what I expect.

“My players know what I expect.

“Enormous respect for the institution and Erik.”

The Catalan manager’s side currently sit second in the Premier League and know this game is vital to their title ambitions.

Keeping pressure on league leaders Liverpool is important, but Guardiola also understands how important the fans are in a derby.

He said: “They have the biggest quality.

“They create something special.”

Pride is on the line for fans when City host United at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday.

The red side of Manchester is hoping their team learns to respect the jersey and spoils Man City’s title chances.
