Big bargains, bigger cause: Hale event supports life-saving cancer appeal

A much-loved community sale is returning with a mission to raise money for breast cancer care while helping families find affordable, high-quality children’s items.

The ‘Good As New’ baby and children’s sale, taking place on May 10 at St Peter’s Assembly Rooms, will raise funds for the Build to Beat Breast Cancer campaign – supporting the creation of a new National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA).

The NBIA will help train more breast imaging specialists and improve access to early screening, ensuring thousands more women in Greater Manchester receive timely mammograms.

Kate Hasluck, Chair of the Sale Committee, said: “Each year, the St Peter’s Good As New sale continues to grow and make a real impact in the community.

“Not only do we help families save hundreds of pounds, but we also help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

“We can’t wait for another fantastic sale on Saturday, May 10, and we are hopeful we can raise thousands more for the Build to Beat Breast Cancer appeal.”

The sale has become a Hale staple over the past 40 years, and in just the last six years has raised more than £21,000 for local children’s hospitals and healthcare initiatives.

The last event, in November 2024, brought in £1,500 for the breast cancer appeal, with 160 buyers rehoming 2,800 preloved items in just two hours.

Shoppers can expect a huge selection of gently used and brand-new items for children aged newborn to 10, including toys, books, clothes, shoes, and baby gear.

Trusted brands like Marks and Spencer, Joules, Next, and Mini Boden will be featured, with many items still tagged or in original packaging.

A local parent and regular shopper Millie said: “I’m so thrilled to have discovered this hidden gem.

“The cost of buying new clothes, shoes, books, and toys for kids can really add up, and this sale is a fantastic way to save money while still finding great quality items.

“It’s so fun shopping for my kids knowing they’ll love the things I pick out for them!”

Entry is £3 in cash at the door (reduced to £1 after 11am), and card payments are accepted for all purchases.

Vendors can register for free, with 25% of their sales donated to the Build to Beat Breast Cancer Appeal.

Anyone interested in selling can email [email protected] to receive a vendor number and labelling instructions.

The sale runs from 10am to 12 noon on Saturday 10 May at St Peter’s Assembly Rooms.
