Thousands will take to the streets of Manchester tomorrow to participate in a women’s rights march across the city.
The organisation UK Women’s March has organised peaceful protests in 20 plus cities across the UK for Saturday 18th January 2025 – two days before Donald Trump’s second inauguration as President of the United States of America, which many have pinpointed as an example of the increasing threat to misogyny and violence towards women and girls the world over.
The Manchester protest will begin at 12pm in Cathedral Yard at the top of Deansgate, next to Manchester Cathedral. From 12pm-1pm there will be a rally and speeches, then at 1pm protesters will march southbound down Deansgate, turning onto Peter Street and ending in St Peter’s Square, where there will be a second rally and more speeches.
The route is approximately 0.75 miles and will take 30-45 minutes.
Across the UK other women’s marches will be taking place on the same day, in cities including London, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brighton, Cambridge, Canterbury, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, Lincoln, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Northampton, Nottingham, Plymouth, Sheffield and Belfast.
One of the national co coordinators of the march, Carolyn, told Women’s Resource Centre: “For me, this march is a powerful act of resistance, a chance to demand change, and a way to honour the strength and resilience of women around the world… It’s about turning anger into action and hope into a movement that cannot be ignored”.
