GMP’s police dog Kyp catches suspected domestic abuser

A GMP police dog has detained a domestic abuse suspect who tried to escape arrest.

Police officers arrested a 26-year-old man in Hyde on 7 November, on suspicion of serious assault of his partner.

Following the arrest, the suspect managed – while handcuffed – to escape from the officers and run towards the woodland.

Police Dog Kyp was deployed to capture the man, and the job was done “within seconds”.

Superintendent Paul Walker, of GMP’s Specialist Operations Branch, said: “Sometimes we will have to use specialist resources to detain dangerous offenders, as was done in this instance. Using a Police Dog is just one of the many resources we have at our disposal.”

Bodycam footage shared by the force shows the handler warning the suspect that if he keeps moving, “you’re gonna get bit”.

Moments later, the suspect is seen screaming in pain on the ground as PD Kyp bites around his thigh.

Walker said: “PD Kyp captured him within seconds and on doing so, the man kicked Kyp in the head and body several times.

“This resulted in PD Kyp biting the man around the thigh and taking him to the floor, waiting for his handler to arrive.

“This is a great example of the type of work our officers are doing every day – arresting a dangerous domestic abuse suspect quickly. One third of all GMP arrests are made in relation to domestic abuse related offences.”

On the property in Hyde – where the initial arrest took place – police found a large amount of class A drugs and weapons, including zombie knives and machetes.

The 26-year-old was arrested on suspicion of escaping from lawful custody, serious assault, possession with intent to supply class A drugs and possession of offensive weapons.

He has been remanded into custody.
