Thousands of winter coats donated across Greater Manchester for homeless and refugees

Thousands of people in Greater Manchester have donated their pre-loved winter coats for homeless people and refugees.

UK charity Human Appeal have collected coats across the country including Greater Manchester as part of their ‘Wrap Up’ campaign.

Mancunians donated over 3,500 winter warmers including coats, jumpers and scarves for ‘Wrap Up Manchester’.

This is more than doubled the amount donated last year – 1,447 items were received in 2023 in Greater Manchester.

Ahmed Osman, Human Appeal’s UK programme coordinator and lead of the Wrap Up campaign, said: “These coats and jumpers are a lifeline to many.

“So many people are struggling between food and heating at home, so naturally people go for food.

“These extra layers are a better alternative for people to survive this winter, helping them through the struggle.”

Winter jumpers made up the most amount of donations with 1750 collected, closely followed by coats with 1161 gifted. 450 items of warm clothing items and 142 scarves helped boost the total.

The items were collected over October and November at different drop-off points across the region including Picadilly station, coffeeshop House of Books & Friends and Safestores in Stockport, Old Trafford, Altrincham, Oldham and Cheetham Hill.

All of the winter items were then brought to one location – Safestore in Stockport – to be sorted and then redistributed to charities across the region.

The Wrap Up campaign has been a huge success across the country. Birmingham received the most donations with 14,045 items, followed by Greater Manchester.
