Storm Darragh causes chaos: Tens of thousands of people were left without power after Storm Darragh swept across the UK. The Energy Networks Association, which represents energy networks in the UK, said about 118,000 customers were affected as gusts of up to 58mph inland and 67mph in coastal areas were recorded. Dozens of flood warnings are still in place across the UK.

Violent clashes in Guinea: At least 56 people were killed after violent clashes during a football match led to a stampede in Guinea’s second-largest city of N’Zerekore. A government statement said protests of dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions led to stone-throwing by supporters resulting in the fatal stampede.

Sports Personality of the Year: Olympic 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson was voted as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024. Darts player Luke Littler was second, with England cricketer Joe Root third. The 22-year-old Hodgkinson becomes the fourth successive woman to win the award after Mary Earps (2023), Beth Mead (2022) and Emma Raducanu (2021). Her coaches, Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, won the Coach of the Year award.

Death of classical music icon: Indian classical music icon, Zakir Hussain died at the age of 73. He is considered as one of the world’s greatest tabla player, and was a four-time Grammy award winner. He died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease, at a hospital in San Francisco.

TfGM strike called off: Unions agreed to suspend strikes by hundreds of public transport workers in Greater Manchester following a new pay offer made during talks with Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM) and the mayor Andy Burnham.
