Would-be sledgehammer bank robbers hunted after audacious Salford heist attempt

By Marios Papaloizou

Three men used a sledge hammer to smash their way into a Salford bank where they threatened employees and demanded money.

The audacious robbery attempt took place at around 5.10pm on July 30 at The Mall, Eccles.

After using the hammer to break through the glass front door, the would-be robbers demanded cash from the terrified cashiers.

When they were told that no money could be accessed the offenders fled the scene in a blue Skoda Octavia with an FY60 registration.

Detective Sergeant Pete Morris from Salford West INPT said: “The men used a sledgehammer to smash open the door which left staff fearing for their own safety.

“They were threatened but when told they could not give them what they wanted, the men left in a Skoda taxi.”

Police believe that the taxi was stolen from the Eccles area on July 16 and are appealing for help in finding the offenders.

The men are white, wore dark clothing, gloves, and had their faces covered.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5097 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
