Qatar World Cup: The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off this year with controversy over the choice of host, Qatar, and its human rights issues. Teams flying in hoped to raise awareness of the issues, including allowing players to wear ‘one love’ armbands to send an LGBTQ+ inclusion message in rebuttal against the homophobic laws in the country.

Musk’s Twitter Empire: Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, bought Twitter for $44 billion in April this year, but in November he used twitter’s poll system to leave the future of the app in the hands of his followers. This unpopular move sparked outrage, as votes concluded to allow former President Donald Trump to have his account reinstalled after being banned in 2021, alongside the reinstallment of other fellow banned accounts.

COP 27 report: The summit started in early November as was hosted by the Egyptian government in Sharm el-Sheikh, after a call to action due to Russia’s war against Ukraine and the fossil fuel crisis it endowed on the nation. Controversy arose, with climate officials such as Greta Thunberg boycotting the summit due to human rights issues, and the summit was criticised as a failure.

China’s covid protest: The streets of China have been filled with protesters in rebuttal against the strict zero-COVID lockdown measures set in place by President Xi Jinping. The protests filled the streets with the most protesters China has seen since the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. 

Netflix’s Wednesday release: The release of Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, ranked up 341.2 million hours of viewership after the first seven days of its release, quoted Netflix. The gothic murder-mystery show topped the record set by the release of ‘Stranger Things 4’ in June this year.
