Two men will appear in court today after being charged following an investigation into football match-fixing that took place in ‘Manchester and elsewhere’.
The investigation by the National Crime Agency led to Chann Sankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual Singapore and UK nationality, being charged.
The NCA said that the two men are among six other arrested who are all alleged to be part of an international illegal betting syndicate based in Singapore.
The charges allege: “At the City of Manchester and elsewhere, the two men conspired together with each other to defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of football matches and placing bets thereon.”
A seventh man was also arrested in connection with match fixing but he and four others were bailed yesterday pending further enquiries.
The suspects reportedly include three current footballers along with a former Premier League player.
However, it is not thought that any Premier League sides are involved in the allegations.
A Football Association spokesman said: “The FA has been made aware of a number of arrests in relation to an NCA investigation.
“We have worked closely with the authorities in relation to these allegations. The FA will make no further comment at this time due to ongoing investigations.”
