Superstar singers Take That has come to the aid of a Wythenshawe community centre struggling for funds by donating a signed CD that will go into a charity auction.
Donated by Jason Orange’s mother, the band’s album Progress dons the signatures of the five members and all proceeds from its eBay auction will go towards the Wythenshawe Community Initiative (WCI).
After being battered by a series of government cuts the WCI is eager to raise £20,000 and keep the centre alive into its 20th year.
Clare North, manager at the WCI, stressed that the profits from the CD would be vital in maintaining the centre’s day-to-day activities which assist the local public.
She said: “The WCI is such an important part of the community, especially now when people are struggling financially.
“Like now, in the school holidays, we offer support for families who really need extra help.
“It’s a friendly place, it’s a mutual place, it’s a place where people come together.”
The centre runs several services such as play schemes, pre-school childcare and contact sessions for separated family.
Having served the community for two decades they have assisted more than 4,000 families and helped 44 individuals into employment.
However continuous government cuts have taken a toll on the centre and in July all funding was completely stopped meaning the initiative is now completely self-subsidised.
Fundraising events such as music nights, raffles and sponsored cycles have taken place but they are still shy of their desired figure.
Bidding is already underway and ends on October 31. To see the item click here.
