GMP have recovered a gun and chemicals that could have potentially been used in an explosive device during a series of house raids in Tameside.
At 1pm yesterday, police were called to a property in Thorncliffe Avenue in Dukinfield following reports of an argument and firearms being discharge shortly after midnight.
Officers attended and discovered damage consistent with a gun being fired, but did not receive reports of any injuries.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
Police then carried out searches at a number of addresses in the nearby area and a gun was recovered.
As part of these enquiries, another house on Barlow Road in Dukinfield was searched and officers found a number of chemicals and suspected component parts for an explosive device.
Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team are working with the police to determine the exact nature of these chemicals and remove them safely.
Detective Inspector Richard Ennis, said: “The presence of firearms officers on Thorncliffe Avenue and in the surrounding area yesterday will undoubtedly have been of concern to local residents but I want to reassure them this appears to be an isolated incident in which no one was injured and for which we have made an arrest.
“As part of our investigation, we have found some chemicals and suspected parts to make an explosive device at a property in Dukinfield and we are working to find out what these chemicals are and update local residents as quickly as we can.
“Again, we do not believe there was any immediate threat to the local community but clearly we are investigating this matter thoroughly.
“If anyone has any information about the firearms discharge or the items found at Barlow Road, I would encourage them to please get in touch on 0161 856 9350, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
