Flights have resumed at Manchester Airport after ‘thundersnow storms’ interrupted scheduled journeys earlier today.
All departures and arrivals were suspended for four hours to allow snowploughs to clear runways as heavy snow fell across the region.
However, the Met Office has issued an amber ‘be prepared’ weather warning across Northern England and passengers have been told to expect delays.
An Airport spokesperson told MM: “Following the poor weather experienced this morning, flights have now resumed but are subject to delays.
“The safety and security of our passengers is paramount and we continue to make significant efforts to clear snow from other parts of the airfield.
“Further periods of poor weather are forecast for the rest of the day, and we would ask all passengers to contact their airline before travelling to Manchester Airport.”
An Emirates airplane battled against strong winds of up to 60mph yesterday and was thrown off course as it approached the tarmac at Manchester.
In a statement released this morning, Manchester Airport said: “We have currently suspended all departures and arrivals for a short period of time, whilst we are in the process of clearing both runways of snow so we can resume operations as quickly as possible.”
Airport bosses took to twitter to announce flights were back up and running around 2pm and thanked staff who have been ‘tirelessly working’ to shift the snow.

Heavy snow has caused disruption across the country and forced hundreds of schools to close but forecasters have warned the UK will be hit by a whole week of snow and freezing temperatures.
Snowfalls of up to 15cm are predicted tonight.
