Armed police swoop on wanted man in Northern Quarter sting operation

Armed officers swooped on a wanted man in the Northern Quarter this morning.

Around 10am, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Aid Unit (TAU) stopped a silver BMW on the junction of Tib Street and Thomas Street, Manchester.

Stunned bystanders looked on as armed officers circled the vehicle, after closing off Thomas Street.

Brodie Carson, 20, from Manchester, witnessed the entire operation from the opposite street.

STING: Officers closed off the street while bystanders looked on

He told MM: “I was just off Thomas Street across the road filming a commercial.

“Police came and blocked off part of the road. Two men got out of the car. It was literally over in about two minutes.”

Terrified bystanders quickly escaped the scene, but Brodie stayed to watch and even recorded part of the operation on his mobile phone.

“Everyone got told to move back, and most ran off to be honest. I stayed though because I had to look after all of the equipment,” Brodie told MM.

ARMED: Police said nobody was hurt in the operation

“I started filming what was going on and luckily I don’t think they saw me.

“I tried to ask the police what was going on, but they couldn’t really say much.”

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and remains in police custody for questioning.

No-one was injured during the incident.
