Trump and hate crime interlocked says charity as Greater Manchester hate crime rises

Hate crime in January increased 10% across Greater Manchester compared to a year ago.

A total of 758 hate crimes were reported to the police in January 2025 making it the third highest January in volume of hate crime since 2010 – a rise of 10.8% compared to January 2024.

The statistics also show an increase from December 2024 by 9.2%.

Director of operations at Manchester charity We Stand Together Jonny Wineberg said: “Trump took office on the 20th of January and started to say very bizarre things.

“So it might be when an individual who creates an environment where people think it’s okay to be racist and say pretty horrible things might be why it increased-particularly online hate.”

Wineberg highlighted Trump’s comments about Gaza becoming a “holiday destination”.

He said: “There will be bearded belly dancers – it’s absolutely crazy – illegal and of course we know that it’s against international law.”

The charity spokesperson said he thinks none of the US senators or representatives have the courage to stand up to him which is “what’s causing all this nonsense.”

He added: “The biggest danger to democracy is when people can’t stand up and speak the truth.

“Our government also having to be very careful and appease him but it all stinks.”

Of the total hate crimes, 555 were racially motivated – an increase of 10% from last January.

From We Stand Together statistics, hate crime towards Jewish and Muslim communities rose by 12% from 2023 to 2024.

Wineberg said: “The reality is that unless the conflict – which is 1000 miles away – changes, people will continue to import that conflict and use it to stir up trouble here.

“The vast majority of hate crime is about race.”

But comparing hate crimes monthly can itself cause issues, as a single event could cause a spike for the whole month.

He added: “It’s difficult because there is not an indication of how much hate crime is online versus in person.”
