Motorists can now drive onto all but one slipway to Mancunian Way after the westbound carriageway re-opened following a sewer collapse six months ago.
The slipway connected to Princess Parkway re-opened after new lane markings were successfully implemented to enable traffic to flow faster.
Water company United Utilities had been working on fixing the sewer collapse since August 2015, after it left a giant sinkhole on the westbound carriageway.
Heavy goods vehicles are still prohibited from driving onto the slipway as a precaution, but the only entrance that remains closed for all drivers is on London Road.
Councillor Kate Chappell, executive member for the environment, said: “We are continuing to work closely with United Utilities so that the Mancunian Way can be fully reopened as quickly as possible.
“But while the contraflow remains open we are doing all we can to make sure traffic flows as smoothly as possible into it.”
New signs and lane markings were put in place earlier this month which directed motorists travelling eastbound onto the Mancunian Way from the Chester Road roundabout to the contraflow towards Ancoats.
The contraflow will remain in place between London Road and Fairfield Street, and will enable traffic to travel in both directions along a single carriageway at a 20mph speed limit.
Councillor Chappell added: “[This system will] make the journey much easier for people coming from south Manchester.”
