General Election 2024: The UK held a general election on July 4, resulting in a momentous Labour landslide. The party, led by Keir Starmer, secured 412 seats in the House of Commons, marking one of the largest Labour majorities since Tony Blair’s 1997 victory. The outcome reflected not only Labour’s gains but also a notable shift as the Conservatives lost support to both Labour and the far-right Reform UK party. 

Trump attempted assassination: In July 2024, an assassination attempt on Donald Trump occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A rooftop shooter injured Trump’s ear and killed one attendee with security lapses widely criticized. Trump raising his fist defiantly become one of the most famous images of 2024. Conspiracy theorists had a field day debating whether the attempt was a soft power move by Trump’s team. 

England lose Euro 2024 final: Euro 2024 came to an end with England yet again failing to live up to expectations as they fell to a 2-1 loss to Spain in the Final. Gareth Southgate left talents like Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench for the majority of the tournament and eventually suffered the impact. Lamine Yamal,17, became the youngest ever scorer in the European Championship as he helped Spain to success.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Deadpool & Wolverine released in cinemas with a host of celebrity cameos including Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and even Wrexham striker Paul Mullins. The film grossed $211 million in its opening weekend to mixed reviews.

Lucy Letby retrial: In July 2024, Greater Manchester hosted a retrial for Lucy Letby, the former nurse convicted of murdering newborns. The case, held at Manchester Crown Court, focused on additional attempted murder charges. It reignited debates on medical oversight and justice system procedures, drawing national attention due to its harrowing details. Whether it was a safe conviction or not was a key talking point across social media.
