General Election 2019: Meet the candidates for Wythenshawe and Sale East

Wythenshawe and Sale East is a Labour stronghold with Mike Kane retaining his seat in 2017 winning 62% of the vote.

The Conservative Party candidate Fiona Green came in second in both the 2015 and 2017 elections winning only 29.6% of votes, but is not standing in this year’s election.

The constituency voted remain in the 2016 EU Referendum, however it was a closely contested battleground with Remain scraping a victory with a mere 50.35% of the vote.

The candidates:

Caroline Bellamy – Communist League Election Campaign

Caroline is one of the two candidates standing for the Communist League Election Campaign in the 2019 General Election.

She joined the Communist League in 1994 and is currently a production line worker in the Tulip meat factory in Manchester and a member of the Community trades union

Peter Harrop, @PHarropforWYSE – Conservative Party

Peter Harrop has held the office of Deputy Chairman Members & Finance for Wythenshawe and Sale East Conservatives since March 2019.

He also serves as an Area Officer on the Greater Manchester Area Conservatives team.

Robert James Nunney, @NunneyRobert – Green Party

Robert Nunney ran as a Green Party candidate in the 2018 Manchester City Council local elections in Brooklands.

Robert has lived in Wythenshawe for 16 years and has campaigned on local issues.

He has been an Operating Department Practitioner at Wythenshawe hospital for the past 11 years and has said he has experienced first-hand the effects of Tory-imposed austerity on NHS services.

Mike Kane, @MikeKaneMP – Labour Party

Mike Kane is the current shadow minister for schools. He was first elected as MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East in a 2014 by-election.

In 1991, Mike was elected to Manchester City Council in Northenden Ward and was appointed Executive member for Arts and Leisure in 2007.

As a Wythenshawe native Mike Kane was inspired to join the Labour party at age 19 by Alf Morris’ championing of the Chronically sick and Disabled Persons Act.

Simon Lepori, @SimonLepori – Liberal Democrats

Simon Lepori joined the Liberal Democrats in 2015. Since then he has stood for the Liberal Democrats in the 2019 the Trafford local election for Stretford and the 2019 Manchester local election for the Miles Platting & Newton Heath.

Julie Fousert, @JulieFousert – The Brexit Party

Julie Fousert is one of the candidates for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.

She is a self-employed mother of three and foster carer.
