‘This has really hit home’: Muslim-led organisations raise £25,000 for Manchester attack victims’ families

Two Muslim-led organisations have raised over £25,000 in aid of those affected by the Manchester Arena attack.

Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND), a community-funded, non-government organisation, have raised £15,245 to support the families of the 22 people killed on Monday night.

A statement on the organisation’s website in the aftermath of the event states: “Our thoughts and prayers are firstly with those who have lost loved ones and whose family members have been injured or are missing following this attack.

“Manchester is a very strong community and will grieve this tragic loss together.”

Russell Brand is one of many contributors, donating all proceeds from his Southport show on Tuesday night.

Dr Shazad Amin, CEO of MEND, said: “Russell Brand has a long history of supporting such worthy charitable causes and we are proud that he has agreed to help these families in their hour of need via our fundraising appeal.”

Meanwhile, Muslim-faith based charity, Human Appeal, have started their own ‘Muslims for Manchester’ appeal, raising over £14,000.

Human Appeal are based in Greater Manchester but help people in need all around the world.

Human Appeal’s UK Programmes Coordinator told MM: “The attack happened in our home and we feel compelled to do something to help.

“This really hit home. It is not motivated by the faith of the attacker. We just wanted to do something positive to help the family of victims.”
