MM’s Year in Review: June

Just Stop Oil protest: Just Stop Oil claimed responsibility for two women who were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after they sprayed orange paint over private jets at London Stansted Airport. The environmental group also claimed the aircraft belonged to singer Taylor Swift but Stansted denied her jet was at the airfield. 

Julian Assange released: Julian Assange was released after spending the past five years in a British prison, where he had been fighting extradition to the US. After facing 18 charges he pleaded guilty to one charge under the Espionage Act of 1917 but was sentenced to time served and walked free from a US court.   

India win the Men’s T20: India won the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados following a 7 run victory over South Africa. This was India’s first ICC major trophy in 11 years and became the first team in T20 World Cup history to remain undefeated throughout the tournament. 

Inside Out 2 tops the box office: Inside Out 2 released on June 10 and went onto cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office after less than three weeks of release, this being the fastest of any animated film in history to do so. In the US and Canada, the Pixar film recorded the best opening weekend of any film in 2024, totalling at $154.2 million.

Manchester Airport power outage: Terminals 1 and 2 at Manchester Airport suffered a significant power cut which led to flights being cancelled and delayed. Baggage and security systems were impacted by the power cut which meant passengers were left in large queues as flights both in and out of the airport grinded to a halt.
