Battered for jar of jam and coleslaw in broad daylight: Pensioner left with broken hip after Droylsden robbery

By Colin Rhodes

An 88-year-old woman was left with a broken hip after being robbed for a jar of jam and a tub of coleslaw in broad daylight on a street in Droylsden.

The elderly pensioner was attacked from behind and dragged to the ground by her attacker, who then made off with her blue carrier bag containing the groceries.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in a stable condition after the assault which occurred on Trent Walk at around 12.15pm on June 21.

Detective Sergeant Dave Donlan from Greater Manchester Police said: “She was left battered and bruised, in a heap on the ground as a result of this desperate act.

“I would urge anyone who saw what happened or who thinks they know who is responsible to call me.

“I can’t believe anyone would be that desperate to get their hands on some food.

“Quite what the offender thought an elderly woman with a shopping bag was carrying, other than groceries, is beyond me.”

The assailant was described as young, white, of slim build and medium height with dark hair and is thought to have run off towards Birch Street after the attack.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0161 856 9395, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
