MM’s Year in Review: May

Infected blood scandal: Compensation offered to victims of the infected blood scandal in the 1970s and 1980s when tens of thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C from contaminated blood products. The government offered compensation to ten people which totalled £13 million.

South Africa 2024 general election: General elections were held in South Africa on May 29 to elect a new National Assembly. ANC remained the largest party with 57.5% of the vote, but lost their parliamentary majority. They have held the majority since 1994, which was the first election after apartheid.

Man City reigning champions: Manchester City won the Premier League. They ended the campaign with 91 points, two points clear of second-placed Arsenal. In doing so, they became the first team to win the English top-flight for four years in a row.

Eurovision Song Contest held in Sweden: Switzerland won with the song “The Code”, performed by Nemo, whilst Croatia and Ukraine completed the top three. A total 37 countries competed at the contest in Malmo. UK entry Olly Alexander came 18th with 46 points.

Man Utd win the FA Cup: Manchester United beat rivals Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley. First-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo gave United the advantage, before a late goal from Jeremy Doku gave City false hope.
