The sporting world is still recovering from the news that Manchester United are up for sale – and over the past few days rumours have been circulating as to who might buy the club.
In a statement on Tuesday night, the club announced they were open to “new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions”.
It came on the same day Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated at the club following a controversial interview with tabloid journalist, Piers Morgan.
Executive Co-Chairmen and Directors, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer said: “We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future.
“Throughout this process, we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”
The tenure of the Glazer family at the club has been marred with controversy and protest following years of decline on the pitch.
With the ownership continuing to take out millions of pounds worth of dividends each year during this period, United fans have been doing all they can to force them to sell up.
It might finally be about to happen, and with several potential buyers reportedly showing interest, just who will be taking control of the Red Devils now?
Sir Jim Ratcliffe
One of the richest men in the UK, and Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is one of the potential buyers for the club.
He would be the preferred buyer among fans due to the fact he supports the club and is also local to the region.
The British man founded the chemicals company INEOS and he is worth $13 Billion.
In an interview with The Times, a spokesperson for Sir Jim said: “”If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer.
“If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.”
Apple
The Daily Star has exclusively revealed that tech giants Apple are interested in buying United in a £5.85 billion deal.
Apple is the largest tech company in the world with an estimated net worth of £2 trillion.
Many supporters will be surprised that they are contenders as they have no previous experience when it comes to owning a football club like United.
David Beckham
Despite being preoccupied with his role supporting the World Cup in Qatar, club legend David Beckham is interested in buying the club according to the Financial Times.
They reported that the Englishman is ready to hold talks to form a consortium with other potential buyers. Someone who would be willing to join his consortium is former potential buyer Lord Jim O’Neill.
He recently spoke to the Manchester Evening News, saying: “If I thought I could be part of some really value-based, purpose-based, better ownership of United, I would, but it would be very, very difficult”
Whatever happens, fans will be hoping that this is finally the beginning of the end and that a sale can come soon.
