Oldham Time Lord enthusiasts are readying themselves for an invasion as the 50th anniversary celebration of Doctor Who lands in town.
A Tardis-load of fan events, fancy dress opportunities and competitions is planned for the week-long event which begins on Saturday October 26.
The wildly popular BBC series, now watched by more than 80million people worldwide, was first broadcast on November 23 1963 making it the longest running sci-fi series ever.
Lifelong Oldham ‘enwhosiast’ (Dr Who enthusiast), Reece Sanders, 25, said: “It’s going to be so surreal seeing my little old home town taken over by all these characters and props from my favourite show of all time.
“The show’s been around for so many years so it’s going to be a great opportunity for the Doctor’s younger fans, his older ones and the ones who are sort of in the middle like me to get out there and have an amazing time.”
The epicentre of the celebrations is Tommyfield Market where an exhibition featuring the Tardis, K9 and several members of the Doctor’s nemeses will take place.
Fans also have the opportunity to win a Doctor Who DVD if they spot one of 11 cut-outs of characters from the show in shops around Oldham, and then snapping a picture with them.
But it may be a good idea to keep your sonic screwdriver at the ready for the final day of the celebrations as ‘Dalek Day’, on November 2, will see an array of baddies from the show out and about mingling with Oldham shoppers.
The council have issued a warning to ‘keep your shopping close’ if visitors to the town centre happen to spot a Dalek, Weeping Angel or Cyberman patrolling the high street.
