One of Stockport’s most famous historical treasures, Bramall Hall, is offering free entry this Sunday before it closes for a £2million renovation.
The free open day, from 1-5pm on Sunday September 28, offers the public a last chance to visit the historic rooms and an opportunity to view the architectural plans and drawings for the hall’s new look.
On the day Stockport Council employees will be on hand to explain about the volunteering opportunities that will arise through the project such as helping with gardening, choosing furniture and taking photographs.
There will also be an opportunity to discover more about the upcoming events that are planned including nature tours, making medieval music and experiencing the life of Tudors and Victorians through various workshops.
Cllr Patrick McAuley, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “I would encourage people to come along to Bramall Hall. This is a great opportunity for them to see this iconic building that is right on their doorstep for one last time before it closes for repair.”
With the £1.6million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, alongside other fund-raising events, Stockport Council are now able to complete more than essential work to the Grade 1 listed building.
The project will restore the jewel in the crown of Stockport’s cultural assets and allow Bramall Hall’s fascinating past to explored by its visitors in a more engaging, modern and interactive way.
Bramall Hall will close on September 29 and will reopen in Spring 2016. The project will include restoration and refurbishment of rooms and decorative features inside the Hall, interpretation of two new themed rooms and landscape improvements.
There will also be improvements to visitor facilities in the Stable Block, including a shop, a renovated tea room and a free ‘taster’ orientation space.
Cllr McAuley added: “Although the hall will unavoidably be closed whilst the work takes place, once completed it will greatly enhance the experience for visitors, improve facilities and provide better information and access.
“It will turn Bramall Hall into a prominent regional tourist attraction, bring visitors to Stockport and give local people an iconic heritage venue they can be proud of.”
The council are hoping that the renovation of the beautiful, timber framed manor house will help to boost the community of Stockport and transform it into a regional heritage attraction.
