Fly infestations and food in toilets: Shocking standards discovered at 15 food outlets in Bolton town

By Ben Butler

Fly infestations and food stored in toilets are some of the horrific conditions at 15 food outlets in a Bolton town that have food hygiene ratings ranging from zero to two.

According to the Food Standards Agency, the 15 food outlets in Farnworth vary from requiring urgent improvement to needing to see an improvement.

Reports dating from June 2012 to November 2013 uncovered La Pizza Takeaway had stored food in a WC, flies were found infested at Godfather Pizza House, while a blue glove was found in food at the Trojan.

One report for La Pizza takeaway, which had a food hygiene rating of zero, said: “At the time of the visit, the area designed as a WC lobby was being used for the storage of food.

“Food should not be stored or handled in this area.”

While another report for Godfather Pizza House, which received a food hygiene rating of one said: “Evidence of fly infestation was found in the rear kitchen and in the server.

“The rear kitchen and the kitchen window were left open and provided easy access for these pets.

“The door and window must be kept closed unless insect-proof screens are fitted.”

The reports also discovered a lack of hygiene awareness among staff at Pizzacorn, Trojan and Steakaway, while staff were found to have not been trained to wash hands properly at La Pizza and Jen’s Butty.

Generally, the reports exposed evidence of cross contamination of raw and ready to eat foods, a lack of hand washing facilities and a lack of protective over-clothing amongst staff.

The food outlets declined to comment.
