Local communities have been called upon to work together to prevent burglary, as the Greater Manchester Police go through ‘challenging times’.
One in three burglaries happen to insecure homes, with unlocked doors and windows being prime causes, and the darker nights caused by the start of the winter months will increase risks.
To raise awareness on the issue, GMP have produced a number of poster, drawing on the iconic ‘Your Country Needs You’ campaign used in the First World War.
And GMP Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan called upon neighbours to use community spirit to ensure that their properties and possessions remain safe.
“It is no secret that the Force is currently going through some of the most challenging times,” he said.
“Burglary has a devastating effect on victims and we know that where burglaries do occur the impact on neighbours can be equally as bad.
“It is more important than ever for people to look out for each other.
“A great way to become active in your community is to join or set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
“As well as encouraging a great sense of community pride and cohesion, it’s a great way of sharing information and deterring criminals from causing misery in your neighbourhood.”
The number of reported burglaries in Greater Manchester has consistently been between 2100 and 2300 in 2015, according to GMP statistics, but those numbers spiked between October 2014 and February ’15, rising to a high of 2555 in November.
As well as being vigilant over locked doors and windows, GMP advise people to consider using mortice locks, house alarms and security lights to minimise the risk of being burgled.
