Man brutally raped in third sex attack in Wythenshawe – police assure public incidents are not linked

By Danielle Wainwright

A man was raped in Wythenshawe on Friday morning yet police are reassuring the public that they believe it to be an isolated incident and unconnected to the sexual assaults in Newall Green.

Police were called to Greenwood Road in Benchill at around 3.45am after the 22-year-old was raped and specially trained officers are speaking to the victim as enquiries continue.

Police believe the rape is an isolated incident and not connected with sexual assaults in Newall Green where two women were sexually assaulted when a man smacked their bottoms and fled.

The man also grabbed the second woman who screamed before he ran off toward Greatfield Road.

Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry said: “We are in the early stages of this investigation but will do all we can to trace the person responsible.

“I would appeal to anyone to come forward. I understand that people in the area may be concerned about the police presence.

“I also know that incidents of this nature are bound to lead to some speculation about what may have happened.

“However, it appears as though this is an isolated incident and there is no link whatsoever to the sexual assaults in Newall Green which are under investigation.”

Patrols in the area have been increased with officers on hand to give advice to residents who want to voice their concerns.

Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 856 1911 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
