Two masked men crept into a Bury dad’s family home and battered him around the head with a hammer as his wife and children slept upstairs.
The brutal attack on the 35-year-old took place at 2.30am Monday July 21 on Gawthorpe Close in Bury.
The thugs made no demand for property, leading police to believe that the attack may well have been ‘a deliberate and targeted assault’.
Chief Inspector Amber Waywell said: “Two men have forced their way into a family home and violently assaulted a man with a deadly weapon.
“He has been hit over the head with a hammer and without question could easily have been killed.
“It is shocking that anyone is prepared to commit such acts of wanton violence in the first place, let alone in the presence of a mother and her children and we will do everything we can to establish exactly what has gone on and more importantly who is responsible.”
The man’s wife and two children were luckily unharmed in the attack.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and investigations are currently underway.
Chief Inspector Waywell said: “If anyone has any information that can help us I would encourage them to contact us in complete confidence.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8204.
