Holiday footfall: Record number of passengers flock through Manchester Airport

By Naomi Powell

Almost two million passengers travelled through Manchester Airport during May this year, an increase of 11% more than the same month in 2012.

This increased footfall takes the total number of passengers in the last 12 months to over 20 million, for the first time since May 2009, revealing the fastest growth rate of the ten largest airports in the UK.

Chief Commercial Officer for Manchester Airport Groups (MAG), Ken O’Toole, said: “Reaching our target of 20 million passengers ahead of schedule was testament to an increasing network of destinations and the hard work we’ve undertaken to highlight this message across the North of England.”

It is now the thirteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth for the North’s busiest transport hub.

This growth is due to a combination of the large wealth of long haul destinations on offer (including Dubai, Washington DC and Moscow) and a continued focus on the low cost market, hosting airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.

Thomson Airways has brought their new bar-setting 787 Dreamliner aircraft to the airport for the first time, ahead of its first passenger flight on July 8, connecting Manchester Airport with Cancun, Mexico and Sanford, Florida.

Other destinations on offer to holidaymakers include Athens, Greece and Waterford, Ireland, along with a new five times a week service to Cairo launched by Egyptair.

Mr O’Toole said these new routes prove that airlines are continuing to recognise the opportunity Manchester provides in serving the Northern market.
