Police have charged a man in connection with a incident where a bank was robbed in Bury by a man armed only with a piece of paper.
It is alleged that Nathan Baxendale, 22, of no fixed adress, walked into the Co-Operative Bank at The Rock, Bury, at around 4.50pm on Wednesday February 19.
He allegedly approached the cashier’s desk, before revealing a piece of paper with a note said: ‘GIVE ME YOUR MONEY. I HAVE A GUN’.
The terrified cashier handed over the money, fearing that she could be attacked, before the man fled.
Detective Sergeant Ian Partington said: “Although no weapon was physically seen, if you try and put yourselves in the shoes of the cashier, you can begin to imagine how frightened she must have been to see this note pressed against her window.
“Clearly the offender had planned what he was going to do and had written out a note with the sole intention of using the threat of a weapon to scare the woman into giving him money.
The charge comes after Greater Manchester Police released a CCTV image of the man.
Detective Sergeant Partington said: “I would like to thank members of the public for their response to our appeal.
“Since it was issued in the media and on social networking sites, we have had an overwhelming response and as a result of comments and information left on GMP’s Facebook site, we have today made an arrest.
“This man will be questioned over the coming hours and our inquiries into the robbery are continuing so I would still urge anyone with information to come forward.”
Baxendale will be remanded in custody to appear before Bury and Rochdale Magistrates’ Court on February 22.
Anyone with any further information should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
