Liz Truss has announced she is resigning as prime minister after 45 days, making her premiership the shortest in British history.
A leadership contest will be completed within the next week.
Leader of the Labour party Keir Starmer has called for a general election immediately.
Truss said she met with the 1922 committee chairman Sir Graham Brady today.
She added: “I recognise… given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the conservative party.”
Truss has notified His Majesty the King of her resignation.
This comes 24 hours after she said “I am a fighter not a quitter”.
Yesterday, Home Secretary Suella Braveman was also asked to resign.
Truss’ resignation has sparked recovery for the pound and government borrowing costs.
