‘Don’t live with regret’: Final appeal for parents of Bolton baby found in plastic bag ahead of Islamic burial

By Glen Keogh

The funeral of the dead baby found wrapped in a plastic bag in Lostock with a note requesting an Islamic burial is due to be held on Wednesday.

The baby, named Alia by police working in close association with Bolton Council of Mosques, was found on Ox Hey Lane on Thursday March 14.

Despite repeated police appeals, the parents of the baby, who was born alive and lived independently for up to two hours, have not come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson said Alia would receive an Islamic burial with the funeral costs covered by the local community.

“I would very much like for the parents to be involved with the preparations for the funeral of their child,” she said.

“If you think you can come forward and talk to us then we will try and get you the help and support that you need.

“This will be your opportunity to be involved with the preparations for the funeral and what I don’t want is for you to live with the regret of not coming forward and being involved.”

The funeral will take place at 3pm on Wednesday May 22 at Zakaria Mosque, Derby Street, Bolton and will be followed by a private internment.

Officers are still unsure what happened to the baby or why she was left on the lane which is regularly used by dog walkers.

Bolton Council of Mosques have released a statement with more information on Wednesday’s funeral.

“We want to appeal for help from all communities to come forward and put an end to this investigation,” a spokesperson said.

“There is help available to Alia’s family and the grieving process could be easier for you if you come forward and use the help that is available.

“You may not get another opportunity and we don’t want you to end up regretting this for the rest of your life.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 5448 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
