The defiant seller of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis’ kitchen table has hit back at criticism of the sale and reposted the item on eBay.
The sale of the table attracted criticism from Ian Curtis’ former band mates and the frontman’s family who were ‘distressed’ over the media reporting of the auction.
However, after a bid of £8,400 proved to be from a ‘timewaster’, the table has remerged and the seller, Tel Harrop, is keen to sell it in order to fund his own musical project.
“I can do a better job at representing myself and the sale of this table then the media did,” he said.
“I had spent thousands of pounds on someone else’s music and extras, to the detriment of my own musical ambitions.”
Joy Division’s Bernard Summer and Stephen Morris released a statement last week to condemn the sale of the table.
“Deborah and Natalie (Curtis) would like to point out that the sale of this table has nothing whatsoever to do with them,” they said.
“They consider the sale of a personal family item, and the subsequent media reporting, to be distasteful and upsetting.”
Speaking to MM Mr Harrop said he was uneasy at the thought that Curtis might have used the table to take his life.
He said: “It wasn’t until I saw the film Control and I saw the prop table that I thought ‘oh man I don’t like this.
“The thought that maybe he’d stepped on it when he took his life didn’t sit quite sit right.”
