A new exhibition exploring the formative years of Manchester’s most famous music label has opened at the city’s Science and Industry Museum.
Use Hearing Protection: The Early Years of Factory Records allows visitors to walk through a visual tour of the label’s early ideas and influences, each illustrating the label’s innovative and restless spirit.
Central to the exhibition is its display of ‘Fac 1-50’, the first fifty items that the label catalogued as they built their organisation, which have now become cultural artefacts in their own right.
MM’s David Adamson spoke to the museum’s Archives Manager, Jan Hicks, and co-curator Mat Bancroft about Factory’s formation, influences, and its unique style and ethos.
