‘First class’: Stockport Council did right thing in keeping family Sure Start Centres open, says town’s MP

The safeguarding of Sure Start Centres by Stockport Council is highly valuable according to a Greater Manchester MP who visited some of the centres this week.

Despite nationwide budget cuts impacting centres elsewhere, Stockport Council has kept all of its own open – one of very few North West councils to achieve that feat.

Andrew Stunell MP, Liberal Democrat for Hazel Grove, visited centres there and in Offerton to see firsthand the services on offer for young families in the borough.

“These centres do a first class job supporting Stockport mums and dads, and they are a credit to everyone who works in them,” he said.

“I’m delighted that their value has been recognized by the Council, who have made sure they are kept open to carry on their good work.”

Mr Stunell was guided round by Jenny Huggins who runs the two centres as well as the High Lane Sure Start Centre.

“It was a real treat to go round,” he explained. “Staff and the council should be proud of what a good job the town’s Sure Start Centres do.”

Mr Stunell also backed Stockport Council for their ‘foresight and common sense’ in keeping the centres open despite the difficult economic climate.

Clare Morrall, of Micklehurst Green, has utilised the Offerton Sure Start Centre with son Jenson for two years and said it benefits parents and children alike.

“My son loves going and we’ve both made many new friends,” she said. “I’ve attended lots of the adult learning courses which range from cake-making to stress-buster techniques.

“It’s a great way for stay at home mums to gain qualifications, advice and support whilst your kids are being well looked after by the helpful staff and having a great time in the crèche.”

Sure Start Centres offer a range of support and services including early education, childcare and some health services for families with children under five.

The aim is for families to have easily accessible services that are convenient for them with a focus on the most disadvantaged families in an effort to recue inequality.

Mr Stunell also backed Stockport Council for their ‘foresight and common sense’ in keeping the centres open despite the difficult economic climate.
