A warning has been sent out by Greater Manchester Police about the dangers of drugs, after an Oldham teenager collapsed from taking contaminated MDMA.
Emergency services were called to a house on Ivygreen Drive, just after 5am on Sunday morning, following reports that an 18-year-old man had collapsed after taking contaminated MDMA at a party at the Oldham address.
The man suffered a reaction that caused him to collapse and fit.
He remains in hospital and is being treated on the High Dependency Unit.
Detective Sergeant Rick Arthern said: “Anytime someone consumes drugs, they are taking a huge risk with their lives.
“The lasting effects this young man will experience are unclear at the moment, but we have all seen the tragic consequences of what can happen when people ingest drugs, and suffer an allergic reaction.
“Families have been robbed of their loved ones.”
Inquiries are on-going following the belief that the MDMA the teenager consumed came from a ‘bad-batch’.
DS Arthern warned: “Taking drugs is risky enough, but when you factor in that we believe this may be a contaminated or ‘bad batch’ of homemade MDMA then that risk goes up still further so my message would be quite simple: don’t do it. It’s not worth playing Russian roulette with your own life.
“There are unscrupulous dealers out there mixing all sorts, and they don’t care what happens to the people who consume these drugs, so if you are offered anything at a party or while you’re out, then refuse it.
“If you have consumed ecstasy recently and you’ve felt unwell, then please get yourself checked out by a doctor immediately.”
