‘Can they score? They always score…’ Manchester United and Family Arts Festival collect match day memories

By Ruth Dacey

Manchester United are teaming up with the Lowry to kick-off the inspiring nationwide Family Arts Festival today in Salford Quays.

Match day memories as pictures or short stories are being collected for the interactive art feature The Match Day Memory Kiosk, which hopes to encourage families to get involved.

World famous Salford artist Harold Riley, an avid Manchester United fan, will be on hand to create the first art to be pasted to the kiosk and is delighted that his two passions have combined.

“Art is not for special people, it is a privilege for all to experience and enjoy,” he said.

“That is why this is such a terrific project in the way it encourages families to get involved in the arts.”

Mr Riley is famed for his friendship with LS Lowry and for his football paintings of which Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson own a significant collection.

HAPPY HAROLD: Riley launches The Match Day Memory Kiosk

Jon Gilchrist, Marketing Director of The Lowry, is proud to be part of The Family Arts Festival, the first ever UK wide festival created to encourage families to connect with the arts and to visit galleries, museums and theatres.

“The activity at The Lowry is the perfect launchpad and our tie-up with Manchester United provides some great subject material that people wouldn’t usually associate with art,” he said.

“We’re convinced families will really enjoy it and hopefully it will kindle a lasting interest in the arts.”

Mr Riley will be joined at the launch by Manchester United mascot Fred the Red and the Premier League Trophy currently held by reigning champions Manchester United.

The Match Day Memory Kiosk is at the Lowry from October 18 until November 3.

Families can visit free of charge to add their own personal artwork to the kiosk.

An additional Match Day Memory Kiosk will also be on display at the Manchester United Museum from October 18 until November 3 costing £11 for adults and £8.50 concession. A family ticket is £36.
