Five Bolton Wanderers fans have been arrested for their involvement in fights which broke out before and after the opening game of the Championship season against Watford.
The men, whose ages range from 21 to 48, have all been bailed until October 30 after being arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
The charges relate to a brawl involving ‘up to 30 people’ in Market Street in Watford at about 2:45pm before the August 9 match, which Watford won 3-0.
Six people from Watford have also been arrested and bailed in relation to the incident, as well as being banned from attending football matches whilst enquiries continue.
Greater Manchester Police, working in a joint investigation with Hertfordshire Police, have said they still wish to speak to six other Bolton fans.
The club have made it clear that they are endeavouring to assist with the investigation.
“We are doing everything we can to cooperate with the police over this matter,” said the club spokesman.
Superintendent Sue Jameson of Hertfordshire Police explained that their side of the investigation also remains ongoing.
“We are taking this matter extremely seriously and the latest arrests are part of our ongoing investigation into the disorder,” she said.
“This sends a clear message to those who may be tempted to get involved in football-related violence that this behaviour is unacceptable. We expect further arrests to be made.”
A Bolton fan was recently banned for football from three years for a racially-aggravated public order offence at the home clash with Burnley in February.
This latest news of fan disorder therefore comes as a huge blow for the profile of the struggling club.
