Wigan masked raid terror: Man threatened and robbed at gunpoint in own home

By Glen Keogh

In the safety of his own home, a man in Wigan was threatened and robbed at gunpoint by two men wearing balaclavas.

When the 50-year-old walked out of his front door on Pendelbury Lane, Haigh at about 9.10am on Friday morning he was approached by the men – one carrying the handgun and the other a knife.

They forced the victim into his own home – threatening him and demanding money – and began to search several rooms.

However while they ransacked his property, he managed to escape to raise the alarm.

Detective Constable Andy Hill, said: “Unless you have been a victim of such an appalling crime, it would be impossible to understand just how frightening it can be to have masked men invade the privacy of your home and threaten you with weapons.

“The best reassurance we can now provide would be to identify the offenders, and the public can help us do that.”

The offenders were last seen running across a field onto Senicar Lane having stolen a bag containing mobile phones and the victim’s wallet.

As part of the investigation police are trying to trace the occupants of a grey coloured, M registered Volvo estate that was seen outside the house on Wednesday 10 April.

The occupants are described as young and the car may have had registration similar to SBU.

The police are searching for clues which may help them trace the violent offenders.

“Did you see two men in the area at the time of the robbery or a grey Volvo estate two days earlier?” DC Hill added.

“Do you recognise the description of the car or know who it might belong to?

“If so, please contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5307, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
