A man was trapped under a train for almost an hour this morning after being hit by the vehicle as it travelled from Leeds to Manchester.
Paramedics were on scene within 15 minutes and fought to free the man for nearly an hour at Marsden Station, West Yorkshire, last stop before the boundary of Greater Manchester.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, has been rushed to hospital by air ambulance.
The incident resulted in delays of up to 60 minutes between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria/Manchester Piccadilly.
The train was a First TransPennine Express train travelling from Scarborough to Manchester Airport.
A British Transport Police spokeswoman said: “BTP officers were called to Marsden station on Friday September 13, following a report that a man had been struck by a train.
“Officers from West Yorkshire Police also attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 8.33am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.
“Medics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended, and the man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance to be treated for his injuries.”
All lines were reopened at 9.45, and passengers at Marsden Station were transferred to a different train.
Jess Owen, 23, was a passenger on the carriage the victim was trapped under. She said those on board were asked by police to avert their eyes from the graphic scene.
She added: “It was a completely unexpected and horrific situation to be in.”
Jonathon Jacob, 32, a businessman on his way into Manchester, said: “Incidents like this bring things into perspective. It’s not about getting from meeting to meeting.”
Eye-witnesses also reported a sheep running loose on the platform during the time of the accident but it is not known if the two incidents are linked.
