A charity which helps those with terminally ill diseases fulfil their dreams of getting married is sending three Tameside businessmen up Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis, in the charity’s first major fund-raising event on Saturday.
The climb is set to kick-start Gift of a Wedding’s fundraising as they work towards their goal of £10,000 by the end of the year.
With the average price of a UK wedding costing over £20,000, for many a fairy-tale wedding simply isn’t feasible, but it is even harder for those facing a fatal illness.
However, Gift of a Wedding makes offers the chance for a perfect day to those who deserve it most.
David Harrison, one part of the trio climbing the 1344m mountain, said: “We decided the best way we could help was to get stuck in and help to raise some money.
“We all think it is a brilliant and original idea that will help some really deserving people.”
The charity was launched by wedding planner Patricia Browne earlier this year and works to arrange and fund weddings for people with a life-reducing illness who want to get hitched but don’t have the money, time or energy to organise a wedding.
Patricia said: “With the help, commitment and dedication of the great team at Gift of a Wedding, we aim to fulfil wedding dreams and create some wonderful long lasting memories for the couple and their family and friends.”
The project idea came about in 2011 after she and several other wedding professionals offered their services free of charge to a terminally ill young man who had just 18 months to live.
She added: “I wanted to be able to fulfil someone’s dreams and give people a choice, one they don’t currently have because they have no money, and we are in a privileged position to do that.”
